Sorry for the late post. We have been VERY busy at Medical Daycare. First things first, we had to completely move our classrooms and everything in our old location to a new temporary location in the hospital. Our old MDC location is getting completely renovated with new tiles, wall paintings, furnishings, etc. It will be so nice to come back to a brand new space that was in huge needs of renovations. In the mean time, we are location right before Kennedy Day School in our own little private room. It is similar to our old space...we are slowly adjusting. In about a month, the renovations should be complete - we cannot wait to see and love our new space.
Besides that, last week was Teacher and Nurse appreciation week and it was so much fun. Honestly, we are all so thankful for the amount of gifts we received...which was mostly in the form of food! We had dunkin donuts coffee, Friendly's ice cream, cookies, pastries, and awesome lunches. Abe's family even had a huge kabob lunch sent to us on Friday - IT WAS AMAZING!! Definitely the best boneless honey bbq chicken wings I have ever had. It is safe to say that we are happy teacher/nurse appreciation week is over because we felt like we were really overeating...HAHA :-) But really, it was awesome and we are so thankful to work with such wonderful students, parents, and staff.
Last week, our students enjoyed a trip to the Harvard Arboretum in Jamaica Plain. It was really beautiful - filled with a lot of flowers, trees, animals and insects. We explored different types of plants, did field studies, felt food to the koi fish and even caught warms and looked at them up close with magnifying glasses. The weather was perfect too - not hot or humid - mid to low sixties and not too much sun for our kids little faces. The students enjoyed being outside and getting a little dirty in the mud and the dirt...per usual.
This week we started off the beautiful day by getting some exercise outside! We went for a short walk around the hospital building and then made our way to our shady covered playground. We played on the swings, the playsets, and of course went down all of the slides. You can tell the students really have "spring fever" - they have been craving this warm and beautiful weather as much as we have. It truly has been a harsh and cold winter.
As for art projects, we made marbled paper again last week. We also continued working on our canvas paintings, and we made an adorable mothers day project that involved our hand prints. We even played with magic markers that only work on magic paper...the color from the marker doesn't get on hands, clothing or the tables, which is especially good for our curious group. As a special treat, we even played with playdoh alot - it really keeps the kids entertained for a few hours.
This week as far as art projects go, I hope to introduce the children to paper weaving, one of my favorite techniques...pictures to come soon.
We also have been practicing noun recognition, fine motor skills involving tracing and bingo markers, counting to 31, color/shapes recognition and singing our favorite songs. We are having a lot of fun in medical daycare!!
I sent out a newsletter this week about the kids starting to bring in sunscreen and baseball caps/outdoor hats. It is important that as the weather gets nicer and the sun shines brighter that we keep our kids safe.
Thank you so much for stopping by the blog. Enjoy the pictures!
Best,
Allison
